What are dental crowns?
Think of it this way: if the tooth is compromised or if there is a big cavity or hole inside the tooth or if the tooth is broken, we want to fix the tooth. This is our tooth, and we want to protect it with a crown or a helmet. Just think of it as a helmet, and crowns go all the way around the whole tooth, protecting it, making it look nice and aesthetic, and also strong.
Is there something else I can do besides getting a crown?
In fact, yes, everything depends on how much tooth structure is present. If we are dealing with a lot of tooth structure, we don't need a dental crown; we can do a bonded filling. But if we're missing a big part of the tooth or it's broken or there is a big cavity, the answer would be to protect the tooth better, and the patient would need a dental crown.
Are there different kinds of dental crowns?
Yes, there are many different kinds, but the most common ones are metal or gold crowns, same-day white porcelain crowns, and crowns made in a lab. Regarding different materials and their advantages and disadvantages, for example, porcelain white crowns are preferred by some patients who have busy schedules and want their crowns done in one visit. We have that technology here where patients come in, we prepare and scan the tooth, and while they wait, the crown is made. They leave with the crown the same day. Lab crowns are usually for big mouth rehabilitation cases requiring multiple teeth. We send these to a lab, and during that time, the patient has temporary crowns. The final crowns are made in porcelain and can be customized to the patient's desired shade and shape. Metal crowns, which are not often done, are usually for the very back teeth if the bite is very tight. They are not very aesthetic, and patients tend to shy away from them.
Is the dental crown necessary after a root canal?
It depends, usually yes. However, if the specialist, called an endodontist, did a very conservative and good job with the root canal, we do not need a crown. We can just build the tooth back up, and we are done at that point. But if a patient had a lot of decay, cavity, or sugar bugs living around the tooth, chances are after a root canal they will need a crown.
What exactly is the procedure for getting a dental crown?
If we're going to do a same-day crown, first we get the patient nice and numb and comfortable. Then we shape the tooth, and instead of taking impressions, we use a small camera to scan the area. After that, the patient relaxes, watches a movie, and the crown gets made in the office. It takes about half an hour, and the patient leaves with the crown the same visit. For the other type of crown, which involves a lab, the process is similar: the patient gets comfortable, the tooth is shaped, an impression is taken, and a temporary crown is placed. A few weeks later, the patient returns to have the temporary removed and the final crown cemented.
Will the crown look normal? Will it match my other teeth?
Today, with the technology we have and different shades available, we can match crowns beautifully to natural teeth so that nobody will ever know. It is up to the patient's desire; we discuss if they want to match or go lighter or more natural. These days it can be done in any way the patient wishes.
Is a crown permanent? Can I get a cavity on the crown tooth?
Yes, you can get a cavity underneath the crown. On top of the crown, it's beautiful and shiny, and cavities will not occur. However, flossing, brushing, and rinsing are super important with crowns, just like with natural teeth, because sugar bugs like to get underneath and cause problems. If a patient takes very good care of the crown, it will last a very long time.
How do I take care of my crowns?
Easy, just like your natural teeth. You're going to brush twice a day, floss every night, and rinse. Your intake of soda, smoking, and sugary products may affect the longevity of the crown. If you're careful with these things, you can keep your beautiful crowns for 20 to 30 years.
Does my dental insurance cover dental crowns?
Yes, they do provide benefits for dental crowns. The benefits may vary and are dependent on the contract between the patient and the insurance company.
What is a dental crown?
A dental crown is a tooth-shaped "cap" that is placed over a tooth to cover the tooth and restore its shape and size. Crowns can also be used to improve the appearance of a tooth or to protect a tooth from damage. In most cases, dental crowns are made from porcelain or ceramic, but they can also be made from gold or other metals.

Is the Process of getting Dental Crowns painful?
No one likes going to the dentist, but there's no need to worry about getting dental crowns. The process is quite simple and painless. At Salvatore Dental in Saratoga Springs, we use the latest technology to make getting dental crowns a breeze. The dental crowning process is generally not painful, although some patients may experience minor discomfort during the procedure. However, most patients report feeling little to no pain after the procedure is complete.
We start by numbing the area around the tooth that will be receiving the crown. Then, we use a dental drill to remove any damaged or decayed tissue from the tooth. Next, we take an impression of the tooth so that we can custom-make your dental crown. Once your dental crown is ready, we'll bond it to your tooth using dental cement. You'll be able to leave our office with a beautiful, healthy smile - and no pain!
